Guernsey will choose its next Lt-Governor
Saturday 3rd July 2010, 2:29PM BST.
CHIEF MINISTER Lyndon Trott has welcomed the news that Guernsey will be able to choose its next Lt-Governor.
Recruitment for the post began yesterday with advertisements appearing in The Times and Deputy Trott (pictured) was glad the island would have its say.
‘I am very pleased, as are all members of the Policy Council, that the three Crown Dependencies are being given this opportunity,’ he said.
‘I would personally like to add that I hope we are able to recruit a replacement who can equal the superb service that His Excellency Sir Fabian Malbon has given, and continues to give, to the Bailiwick.’
The advertisment will be repeated in the Sunday Times.

An ideal time to scrap this outdated position , as guernsey seems hell bent on getting rid of the old things lately, this is one way to instantly save a huge amount of money ,the salary is advertised at something like 105k the house can be sold (biig bucks) saving on staff salaries and upkeep ,and no more ceremonial costs .
The days are gone when the queens representitive had to call out the militia when the peasants were revolting ,and its no reflection on past and present encumbents who have done a sterling job and they and their families have been well liked by the people of guernsey , but as well as the hundreds of thousands of pounds that this position costs us to run ,it will send a clear message to the english that the post is no longer wanted or needed, regardless of what lyndon says (not a good track record on getting things right) so come ,on tell the real people of guernsey that instead of raising taxes ,and doing away with school dentists ,and raising pensions etc do something useful ,popular and save lots of money .

I’ve always thought that it was fitting that a Governor lived in that house
If you can remember who had it built: If history is to be believed.

I am surprised that the post is being advertised as if it were some management position. I assumed it would be an appointee from within the diplomatic establishment.
I wonder who will apply?
Maybe Bernie should go for it – as he may well not get re-elected in 2012. (that’s a joke by the way)

I think the advert included that applicants needed to have had a distinguished military career(sorry can’t remember the actual wording), so it isn’t open to just anyone.
Is the Governor not paid for by the English crown then
Report abuse
@Sandy – I wonder why they insist on a distinguished military career for the post. Perhaps they’ve heard about the ‘intimidating’ kids hanging around by the Town Church and are about to declare martial law….
Sandy – that makes sense, thanks.

John – I’m pretty sure Guernsey pays for the Lt Governor. This is effectively the payment we make to be protected by the British Crown?
I’m not 100% so hold off on the lynching rope.
This is what BBC news states;
Applicants have been told they must have a full and distinguished military career.
Candidates need to apply to Guernsey’s Bailiff’s chambers for an application pack.
The advert said the island’s authorities would decide the appointment, a move away from past appointments, which were made by the Queen from recommendations drawn up by the Ministry of Justice.

I wonder if playing Medal of Honor or World of Warcraft counts as a distinguished military career? ;-)

In which case Paul those kids could apply for the job!
win win!
:)

Quite right Lynnie – and with the huge salary and housing benefits on offer they could do a job share and employ about a dozen at a very good wage.
To every problem there is a solution if we apply a little creativity….think outside the box people! :-)
Why not do away with the job entirely. make government house the official residence of the Chief Minister and let Lyndon move in
Report abuse
COMANDER COLIN FERBRACHE WOULD BE IDEAL FOR THIS JOB, AND SEEING HE LIVES HERE, THE STATES COULD RENT THAT BIG HOUSE,TO PAY FOR HIS WAGES? JUST A IDEA

I understand that H E’s salary is paid by Guernsey and, is tax free – is this correct?

The post of a military Lt Governor for Guernsey is about as outdated as bad King John and its abolition could save a lot of money which, as 1776 said, could be put to better use.
By the way 1776, I don’t think the English actually care two hoots whether Guernsey has a Lt Governor or not.
What is more important is that, as 1776 said, the position is outdated, and if Guernsey really is ‘…hell bent on getting rid of old things lately…’ then maybe it is time for Island to move on and finally accept that this is the 21st century, not the 12th century. This means an open, democratic and accountable form of government; a free press; the adoption of Habeas Corpus; and the ability to cope with iFones.

@Green Monster – I agree totally but with one minor adjustment: change Chief Minister Lyndon Trott to Paul Le Page and I’m with you all the way! ;-)
I can understand the UK keeping the monarchy as if nothing else it attracts the tourists but I must confess I don’t really see the point in a Lt Governor for Guernsey. I doubt many tourists come to Guernsey to see Government House – it all seems a bit out of date to me. The Bailiff can do the ceremonial bits just fine, Government House could be sold off (or leased to me for a peppercorn rent) and the money spent on improving mental health services.

John Gollop for Lieutenant Governor yeeaahh!!!!!

I think we should have a Muslim Lieutenant Governor to show our diversity.
Who decides what “Distinguished” means in this context?
I might apply and argue the point.
Andy – why stop there? Personally I think the Lt Governor should be a colourblind black lesbian pacifist who is a republican. :-)
Why in the world would Guernsey want to have a Governor
It’s an Archaic form of degradation for the people.
It should never have been in the first place, if England wants the ancient ways, that’s up to them, we are not of their breed.
I would expect our people to reject any such stupid position.
People like the present so-called 1st minister have their beady eyes on the job, for only one reason To swell heads even more than now. Kick them all out at next Voting and choose wisely. People who care for Guernsey.
