ALL imports of Spanish tomatoes to Guernsey have been banned after devastating moths were found in a warehouse.

Five tuta absoluta, otherwise known as South American tomato moths, were discovered in traps at an importer’s premises.

The moth was first noted in Europe in 2006 and has been causing widespread damage to fruit crops in Spain.

Commerce and Employment head of plant protection Terry Brokenshire said the five adult moths were discovered during a routine check of traps at the site.

‘We caught the adult moths, but there could have been larvae within the fruit,’ he said.

What’s gone wrong is that a lot of vineries are now housing estates. However it seems that only the BIG players, those who seem to know people, get permission to build on old vinery sites.

The Guernsey tomato industry died in the 1970′s when Dutch growers started mass producing (flavourless) tomatoes for the UK market.

There are still local tomato growers though, and they certainly produce enough fruit to supply Guernsey so there really should be no need to import Tomatoes from Spain.

The Co-Op do local toms, or failing that there is always hedge veg. If we all boycotted foreign tomato imports we could help our growers and get rid of these nasty little bugs at the same time.

There is no sensible reason why we should have to import tomatoes, or anything else we can grow enough of locally. We really need to sort out our farming industry.

Laziness is one of the reasons why not more is grown for home use.
Far too long people are frightened to get their hands dirty doing an honest job.

One day; and I foresee that not in the too far distance the end will come of the Finance as is of today.
Then like the Silly Twelve Virgins who forgot to fill their lamps- then people will run around not knowing what to do.

Those in Hong Kong had a bit of a job, it will be worse for the Islands, they have lived an easy life. poor fools ‘Fools Paradise’ was no myth.
