Bin less and pay less – eventually

REFUSE rates could fall if people continue to recycle, according to the Public Services Department.
Many parishes are sending less rubbish to landfill, but parishioners have still been hit by rising refuse rates due to high gate fees.
A Public Services Department spokesman said they were aware of the situation.
‘The cost of landfill increases, even if the amount of rubbish going in reduces,’ he said.
‘The most successful measure in reducing waste being sent to landfill has been the increased tipping charge. As a result of that, and other initiatives, we have reduced the amount of waste going into Mont Cuet by half since 2001.’
