Redundancy talk out of line, states Health’s chief officer

Mark CookeMANAGERS at Health and Social Services have not been authorised to discuss redundancies with staff, the department’s chief officer has said.

Mark Cooke, pictured, moved to quash speculation that some staff had been offered voluntary redundancy after reports emerged that the department was assessing the impact of several ‘radical’ ideas to cut costs – including closing two hospital wards.

He acknowledged that HSSD was looking at a wide variety of options to save money and accepted that discussing these suggestions with staff had caused concern.

But redundancies, voluntary or otherwise, should not have formed part of any discussions with staff.
