THE States are running out of time to decide what to do with the Roman wreck, Asterix.

The vessel was discovered in St Peter Port Harbour in 1982 and raised between 1984 and 1986. It has been undergoing restoration at the Mary Rose Trust since 1999 and was ready to come back to Guernsey this year.

However, there is nowhere large enough or suitable for the wreck.

Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara said they planned to discuss the problem over the next few months.

‘We can either keep it in storage, put it on display or dispose of it,’ said Deputy O’Hara.

Dispose of it? For heavens sake, Guernsey, are you bloody stupid? Or is it just this idiot?

Would be a great tourist attraction no? So of course, we can’t keep it here – it might be good for the island and some may not be ready to use it to line their own pockets. And we couldn’t have that could we?

There was a Press article a couple of months back where Mr Le Poidevin of ALP Flowers was trying to find a use for a large secure but defunct packing unit just off Landes du Marche

If someone could change the mind of yet another of our expensive UK imported jobsworths who decreed that it must be retained for horticulture in case the tomato industry flourished again,it might be one worth Mike O’Hara looking at

Mark, I doubt he means turning it into firewood….the more likely meaning I would hope is to give it to a museum elsewhere.
