‘Obvious anomalies in Sunday Trading law’
Saturday 10th July 2010, 2:29PM BST.
THE Guernsey Douzaine Council is unanimous in its view that the Sunday trading law needs re-thinking, its chairman has said.
Deputy Shane Langlois said the council had discussed the issue in the wake of the ongoing dispute between Trading Standards and Castel parish officials about whether Le Friquet Garden Centre is breaking Sunday trading legislation.
The parish believes the business does comply with the law but Le Friquet’s freedom to operate on Sundays as it currently does is under threat after Trading Standards warned Castel officials that they could face a judicial review if they do not further limit what the centre sells on Sundays.
Deputy Langlois (pictured) said the clash over Le Friquet highlighted the problems with the law.
‘I think it’s fairly unanimous among the Douzaine Council that it needs looking at but what is not unanimous is whether the law should be completely repealed,’ he said.
