PEOPLE had to be evacuated from their Foote’s Lane homes yesterday morning after a pressure cooker exploded.

The fire delayed the start of the Race for Life and residents of Meadow Grove apartments, opposite the Grammar School, escaped to the pavement as thick smoke poured from a ground floor kitchen.

Postman Ben Hunter, 26, had expected to spend the morning watching a friend take part in the Race for Life.

He was walking along Foote’s Lane, with friend Jamie Roussel, towards the start when he spotted smoke coming from the window of the flat.

‘We went to help some old people out of a side door, as they needed to get people out of the building,’ he said. Then, concerned about the source of smoke he went to investigate the kitchen.
