GUERNSEY’S High Street was nearly deserted yesterday despite more than 4,000 passengers from two cruise ships being in Town.

Many from the Balmoral and Crown Princess were surprised to find many shops shut and instead spent their time – and money – on the seafront enjoying the Taste of Guernsey event.

There are 14 shops with a category-K licence allowing them to open when a cruise ship is in. There are also 67 businesses with permission to open on a Sunday. However, some shopkeepers who did open yesterday were disappointed.

Jan Rushton, of The Pioneer, said she had been open since 9am but no customers went in until 11am.

But not all shops were so quiet. Swarovski sales assistant Ellie Castle said it had seen quite a few customers.

That is because there is so much better to do on Guernsey than shop. It is a beautiful island, so why waste time in the shops. I read all the questions and answers about Guernsey at http://www.cruise.co.uk/cruise-answers and everybody advised the same – get out and about and explore Guernsey as it really is a very pretty island
