Blue Islands boss backs Alderney-UK link
Tuesday 20th July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
DEREK COATES says there’s ‘no chance’ of Blue Islands cutting Alderney’s direct link to the UK.
Healthspan boss Mr Coates was speaking ahead of a possible takeover of Aurigny, which currently operates services between the island and Southampton.
When asked about the ramifications any takeover would have for Alderney, Mr Coates said: ‘It will provide the same secure links as before – direct links to Guernsey and direct links to Southampton. We will ensure the services continue and are as good as they ever were.
‘The only reason Blue Islands is not flying from Alderney to Southampton at the moment is because the States of Alderney refused our application to fly in competition with Aurigny.’

All very well Mr Coates saying this but he is the sole owner. We are all mortal and he won’t be around for ever, sad fact of life, so who is going to take over from Mr Coates?
Who is to say the new owner won’t want to get shot of Blue Island? Who is to say he won’t sell the hotel in Alderney and pull out of Alderney ?
There are too many risks in this sale to allow it to proceed

A good decision was made by the States in not allowing Blue Islands to fly on the the Southampton route. Blue Islands had the freedom and no competition to fly on the Bournemouth and Shoreham to Alderney routes, but they shut both those routes. Blue Islands seemed to want to fly the same routes as Aurigny in direct competition only. Alderney/ Southampton is probably the only profit making route hence Blue Islands keeness to have it!! Quite frankly Mr Coates it will take more than your assurances to convince the people in Alderney of your intentions.
