KING OF THE BEERS took Jersey by storm at the weekend to win the Channel Islands champion hurdle at the island’s latest horse-racing meeting.
It ended a 16-year wait for Guernsey owner and trainer Tom Bougourd, who previously won the event with Clear Home in 1994.
The horse went into the event in good shape, having won his three previous outings over hurdles this season, although all of those wins were in handicap events, whereas the MercuryDeliver.com Champion Hurdle was a level weight race.
But it took the lead at the beginning of the race and jockey Rob Kirk never relinquished it, crossing the finishing line ahead of defending champion Koka Fast.
