Dumped truck ruins scenic west coast spot

Friday 23rd July 2010, 2:29PM BST.

A BEAUTY spot is being spoiled after a vehicle was abandoned in a west coast car park.

Sarkee Jacques Peree works in Guernsey and does not expect sights such as this dumped vehicle full of rubbish at Port Soif. (Picture by Tom Tardif, 1002338)

The grey Suzuki truck was left at Port Soif earlier this month. Since then, all four wheels have been taken, the steering wheel has been removed and the floor of the cab has rusted through.

The back has been used as a dumping site for items such as an electric fireplace, a dismantled chest of drawers and a tangle of cabling.

The rusted cab is now propped up on stones.

This will become more common, it costs £30 to get your vehicle dumped by the States, free if you can drive it down there.

In the UK YOU get PAID for scrapping your vehicle, why isn’t it like that here??

The totally ridiculous point is that if a vehicle is abandoned, the owner of the land on which it has been illegally dumped is unable to find out from Motor Tax Department who owned the vehicle so that action can be taken against them “due to Data Protection laws”. Pathetic, and a disgraceful example of how we have become beholden to worthless bureaucracy. Abandonment of vehicles is becoming a major problem on this island. Is it really beyond the wit of the States to pass a law which allows Data Protection laws to be overridden in specific circumstances ? Oh, I forgot, that would involve logic and common sense so that’ll be a total non-starter then.

GG that was a recession aimed tactic to get people buying new cars.
    It wasn’t an environment scheme….sadly.

    Everything for a price ey?

Its not like the states dont know who last owed the vechial…..charge them the £60 for not making sure it was scrapped.

    that ain’t nothing.

Try taking a trip down to one of our prettiest bays, Petit Bot, and check out all the cannabalised, trashed and generally abandoned looking heaps that fill the Manor Hotel car park and surrounding road.

Last time it was cleared, the parish had to pay for it, and undoubtedly will again, as the owner of the aforementioned doesn’t want to, and evidentially has no intention of upsetting his classy clientel…

and it’s been like this for years-!

David is right to be scathing about the abuse of data protection laws to shield those who dump their cars on the property of others.

The present Guernsey law allows for data to be released if it is in the public interest.

Even if disclosure were to be contrary to the Data Protection Law what would the car owner do? Even in the highly unlikely event of a prosecution itbis equally unlikely the Magistrate would inflict any penalty.

However,as David says, it is unlikely that the Law Officers would have the desire to make a simple change in existing law, to outlaw the anti social behaviour of car dumping.

You have to remember that the States subsidise the dumping fee, it actually costs £150 to dump a car.

This rip off never gets publisised.

To realise just how corrupted the States is.
If you took your car to Portsmouth, took it to the scrapyard and came back as a foot passenger, you would have about £20 profit to spend on duty frees.

They have now also stopped scavenging at the scavenging yard, to increase the value of material going to the scrapyard.

Back when my dad was a Constable a parishioner would have made a call and dad would have phoned the police got the number and told him to move it. Failing that they would have moved it and sent the owner the bill.

We’ve created a world where the police won’t provide details due to Data Protection, lawyers have advised officials that removal might be either a) stealing b) expose them to a legal action.

Welcome to the 21st Century where common sense and community has been replaced by mis applied regulation, lawyers and a society, their volunteers and adminstration cobbled by the fear of litigation.

If you went to move that today you could be arrested for stealing. Nuts huh?.

So many official bodies hide behind the data protection excuse

Other than the actual Data Protection staff I doubt that very many people actually understand the law

Might be an idea for a Press reporter to clear up this particular abandoned vehicle problem with a quote from the Data Protection office explaining why an offender can hide in this way

    2 things.
1, I went looking for the van the other day and it wasnt there. Must have been moved or dumped.

2, i costs nothing to dispose of a vehicle if it is in your name. Simply go to Frossard House with your log book, fill out a form, take the form and vehicle to Guernsey Recycling (O Tooles yard) and drive away. Ive done it loads of times.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if a land owner towed an abandoned vehicle onto a public highway in the dead of night, it would disappear very quickly.

Its the same at the Salerie Corner carpark. There are abandoned cars, vans, and even two motor-homes at the northwest corner of the carpark, right on the skyline.

I thought that you’re not allowed to park even a properly insured motorhome in a public place, so why are those eyesores being ignored?

That carpark is visited by a traffic warden most days. Perhaps they are turning a blind eye to insurance offences if they know the owners?

Why not get all these old vehicles and dump them out to see behind the Boue Blondel. We could create an artificial reef and at the same time put an obstacle in the way of those pair trawlers who are nicking all our bass.
