DIY kits pose risk of infection and scars, warns expert
Monday 26th July 2010, 1:00PM BST.
PEOPLE are endangering themselves by using do-it-yourself tattooing kits sold on the internet, according to a local tattooist.

Tattooist Paul White, who has seen the damage done with them, has joined calls to ban the online sale of DIY kits. He even bought one himself to get it safely off the street. (Picture by Adrian Miller, 1003539)
Paul White, proprietor of White Inc. Tattoo in Town, has been in the trade for 14 years and said he was now seeing one customer a week who wanted a cover-up job done on a DIY tattoo they regretted.
Home tattooing kits can be bought over the internet for as little as £30 and with no regulations on their sale, Mr White believes they pose a danger to public health.

The only concern you have is the loss of trade to your shop Chalky. It is an area where most artists can excel in & achieve superb results with no experience at all.
With the amount of money charged for a Tattoo locally it’s no wonder people are looking into cheaper alternatives.
Personally I think they are unnecessary & ugly. Can’t see the point in them other that being something for insecure people to use as a conversation piece.
Some of the more amateur creations, ACAB, LOVE, HATE, make me laugh though. More so at the idiots sporting them.
Some are very artistic for sure. But who in their right mind would wish to be branded with something for the rest of their life?
I happen to have a mate of a mate with 600 of these kits that are going on sale on a popular auction site. Would Chalky be interested in purchasing all of them seeing as though his concerns seem so genuine enough?
I think its very easy to pick and choose what you do and do not agree with and theres a very fine line between looking after yourself and taking a genuine concern in others.
Am i not right in thinking that everyone has to start somewhere? Mr White, im sure you were’nt given hundreds of pounds worth of equiptment whilst you were starting out.
Yes, im sure we all agree that in the wrong hands, these kits can be dangerous, but isnt that the same with any tool?
Perhaps, if you are so concerned about the damage this is doing to the youth of today, offering users of these kits guidance rather than looking down your nose at them may prove beneficial not only to them, but to your business and reputation too.

Surely having any tattoo is to be taken very seriously indeed, and to be thought about very much due to the obvious fact of not being able to have realised it was a big mistake at a later date. But it must be done if you are determined to have one by a professional who uses all the right equipment and expertise. Paul is right how many people do think years later that it was a big mistake and even a bigger mistake if done by yourself.
If what I read in the Press about these kits using lead, then they are very dangerous and could lead to lead poisoning. Then of course there is the risk of infection,a licensed tattooist would know how to minimise that risk.I assume all tattoo parlours here are licensed?
Firstly, my name is Paul like the article said and not an old nickname that you spelt wrong.
There is no loss of trade at my studio, nor anyone elses I would have thought. These scratchers make more trade for the professional tattooists in the
Island.
As for the cost here, which not being tattooed yourself you must know alot about. I can tell you that in comparison to the UK, Europe or America where you can expect to pay £100 upwards an hour, the price in Guernsey and the rest of the Channel Islands is very fair.
People with tattoos do not comment on people who dont have tattoos – funny that is!
Freedom of choice, everyones different.
Lastly if you have children or maybe one day will have children, lets hope they have someone who will speak up and maybe save them from a blood disease caused by a scatcher and not let it go because a mate of a mate wants to make a fast buck at any cost (who’s all about the money now?)
Photocopier ink, poster paints and lead can be used in these kits, which can do serious skin damage and blood poisoning.
Tattooing has had its dark ages in the past and letting these people drag it back would be a crime against the art form of tattooing and the people who wear it.
Thanks for all your comments on this article Paul White , White inc. tattoo

paul says, “People with tattoos do not comment on people who dont have tattoos – funny that is!”
How ridiculous a comment is that?
Thats like saying, “People with no legs don’t comment on people with legs”

Fair enough “Chalkie” apologies for the spelling mistake there. I would just like to send a message to the ladies considering tramp stamps.
I am well aware they are becoming quite popular with the opposite sex at the moment. This is especially the case in USA where one sees them on many stunning women.
Not everybody finds them attractive. I am put off completely by them as well as body jewellery. I don’t mind ears pierced or belly button. Other than that, no thank you.
I believe one can usually determine the IQ of the sporter of tattoo’s by what they have & the number & placement of such personal vandalism.
Our body is ours & we have every right to do as we choose with it. However, just because one might appreciate something here & now does not necessarily mean it will be appreciated in ten or twenty years down the line.
If people have good money for unnecessary rubbish, they should think long & hard about what better it could be used for. Worst case scenario would be for them to consider semi-permanent tattoo’s.
That’s all I have to say about this subject. I find it unnecessary, unattractive & a waste of time as well as good money.

Paul (the owner of white ink)
Is only trying to do his bit in stopping the online selling of these tool kits, so they dont end up in the wrong hands.
If one of your kids got their hands on one of these online kits and tried to tattoo themselves, you’d start moaning on how someone should stop the selling of them.
Its about time people stop living in the dark ages

I feel this has somewhat drifted off what the article was originally covering. As with other industries there should be some protection for the customer we expect it with our financial wealth and our health so why are people complaining about what Mr White has done in the industry he is involved in. I remember some years back a local dentist being struck off the register knowing two people that were left in pain and with appalling dental work which had to be corrected at a later date causing more discomfort I do not remember people complain about the dentists carrying out the repairs and making good of effectively a bad job.
Paul you mention ‘Tramp stamps’ (For those reading who are not aware of this sexist derogatory phrase it is a tattoo on a woman’s lower back) as being unsavoury whilst as you mention one of your hobbies appears to be studying attractive women and passing comment or mentally judging them have you ever thought about actually introducing yourself to the person rather then looking at them as an object? Each to their own I suppose. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and life choices and the money which they earn as a free individual is their own to do with as they wish surely? Not all people believe in things such as philanthropy but surely I shouldn’t be discriminated against it for being actively involved or a Man of the church who wishes to give money to his church should we discriminate against him as well?
I feel your post above is very angry and negative against what Mr White has done and to be frank attractive women and society in general. Some people do regret Tattoo’s in later life but you would be surprised as the people who sport them, I would hate to look at a Doctor or surgeon and suddenly doubt their IQ if I noticed they wore a tattoo on their arm.
The problem I have with introducing myself to attractive women is Mrs Haslam!
I dont mind the Tramp Stamp, Mrs Haslam is currently thinking of getting one, and she doesnt mind her doting husband looking at other ladies stamps, however if that transgressed to me starting my patter on someone I’d be getting a tramp stamp all of my own.
Ankle tatoos on the other hand uuuurgh!!
As for the story itself, good on you Paul (White), this isnt something that will wash off, this is a permanent scarring, that also carries significant health risks.
As for the “everyone has to start somewhere” arguement. If you start out in any business on your own, there is expenditure, would you expect a newly self employed carpenter to turn up at your house and ask to lend your tools, or actually turn up with improper, unsafe equpiment….. I wouldnt.
This should apply even more for tatoo artists, you can always knock down and rebuild an rubbish cupboard, a tattoo is not so easy!

Paul White has been a tattooist for a good few years and clearly knows his trade. In the event of me having a mid-life crisis and I feel the need to “get ink”, I’d be knocking on his door. The bloke has raised some genuine concerns regarding dodgy internet kits.
Just take the article at face value. Crap ink, hygiene concerns and a chap in an an unregulated industry showing some responsibility.
Be nice people!

I agree with Mr White that in the wrong hands these kits are potentially life threatning so stick with the professionals like Black Star !!! oh and if you cant get an appointment there the go see Mr White

Paul – (not Mr White) one can usually determine the IQ of people from what cr*p they spout too.
I personally don’t have any tattoo’s but that is because I’m far too indecisive to decide which one it is that I want. Whilst physical attractiveness is of course one of the things we look for in a potential partner I won’t bore you all with what I do and do not find attractive. It’s down to personal taste. For all the people who don’t find something attractive there will most likely be the same number of people who do find it attractive. I happen to know a lot of women that have tattoo’s and I doubt very much that the reason for getting the tattoo was so they could land a man. Of all the men who were turned off by it then great because that means it would have taken 5 seconds to realise this is not going to work out rather than 5 years.
It’s an expression, just like colouring your hair, getting piercings and what type of eye shadow you wear.
These kits are irresponsible by the manufacturer, however, anyone wanting to get their hands on one probably will. There’s got to be an element of personal responsibility here. I haven’t seen the kits myself but do they come with a warning note? Correct guidelines?
Just to point out the tramp stamp (or sl*g tag, as it is otherwise known) is not only for the ladies. There are men that have it done and still have it refered to as a tramp stamp.
Also, Mr White is trying to point out that the kits are dangerous, contain somewhat lethal elements and carry the risk of infections under un-supervised(unlearned) hands. Good on you.
Is this a joke?
There are people out there actually dumb enough to use a DIY tattoo kit?
Unfortuately there are Dean, and they are probably under the legal age for a tattoo.
I know of a 16 year old that just got ‘scratched’ by a their ‘friend’ that is ‘learning’ to become a tattooist.
Hopefully if the message is ‘you could get serious blood poisoning’ they might think twice, because most won’t be bothered about the ‘you’ll regret it when you get older’ aspect.
I don’t think you can knock Paul for highlighting a problem, he could have kept stum and carried on getting the money from doing the ‘repairs’. He could lose money if people take his advice and don’t use these kits!
I cant believe people are having a go at Chalkie for speaking up – anyone who thinks he is looking to gain out of this is a fool…
He is a professional guy who works in a dangerous industry, who is speaking out in the interests of safety…
If you could get cheap dangerous travel vaccines online & a healthcare professional came out & said be careful, they are dangerous – would you question him/her??!! NO!!!
I cant wait to get my new tattoo of a wolf eating a robin!!

I completely agree with Lynnie.
And I believe it is ridiculous and narrowminded to believe you can judge a person’s IQ by the tattoos they do or don’t have.
Paul (not Mr White) obviously has an axe to grind. It would be interesting to know profession he is in….
Contrary to what Paul states, I sure Mr White doesn’t need the business generated by fixing these “have a go tattoos”.
Professional tattooists are regulated by the Health Authorities, but as with any trade, there are always cowboys.
White Inc every time!

Good post Neil Inder, couldn’t have put it better myself.
I’m no fan of tattoos personally so not surprisingly I don’t have one. It’s a free country though and it’s none of my business what other people want to do.
Oh by the way I know people who have done pretty well in life who have tattoos, so I’m not sure how that fits with Paul’s IQ/Tattoo theory….

Its my turn now. lol. I am from the Big island and massively over populated city of Bristol, also i have loads of tatt’s. I have seen hundreds of these scratched on tattoo’s over the last few years and believe me when i say that the best you get is a really sh*ite tattoo and the worst you get is the loss of the muscle use under a very infected mess, not o pretty sight i can tell you. I admire the control the states has on what you can and cant buy like the evil that are legal highs (dont get me started) we have parents losing there kids everyday over here. Ban the tattoo kits now States of Guernsey that what you should do.?
I am going now but just to say Paul the tattoo hater get out more, i am shure you are the type of person that still rate Women on the “Pints” scale, and when you get home say hi to ya mum for me and let the cat out theres a love…Peace…Ps. i now have tattoo’s from Mr Paul White and would happily have his babies what a top bloke…….

I have 10 tatts and I HATE the term tramp stamp!I also hate people judging others on the colors on their skin – I may not like your shoes or shirt but I would never tell you to your face so don’t be rude to me. Mr White is the only person I trust to tattoo myself but I also know people who tattoo themselves. some look good some don’t – same as any tattooist I guess!! as long as the correct ink and a sterile environment is used and proper after care there should be no problem but I understand that not every one follows this rule! I would guess maybe Mr white could set up a master class for those who are serious about tattooing? pass on good advice and practices for a fee? just a thought.
Paul, you feel you can stereotype people with tattoo’s into a category.
The fact that you spend your time writing so much about something that concerns or affects you so little makes me think what do you actually do with your time. You seem to be one of these busy bodies who has an opinion on everything as you have nothing better to do with your life than sit at a computer having an online argument. I would not usually involve myself in such activity but your small minded attitude has angered me.
As someone who has a couple of tattoos, I would agree that these kits are dangerous as the procedure takes place in an unsterile environment and the damage lead etc can do to the body is serious.
Your whole point on having tramp stamps and a low IQ is a load of rubbish, I would like to let you know that I did not get tattoos for anyone else, I got them for me so to think that “us” women get tattoos for the attention of men is totally sexist. I myself, have always achieved well in exams and have a very good job so before you go writing your opinions again, maybe you would like to have some actual fact.
Paul White also stated in the article that he was getting a lot of trade from people who wanted their tattoos corrected from the DIY Kits so it is not about money making, he was clearly stating the safety issues with the kits. Maybe you should read a little closer next time.
Maybe Mr White should introduce IQ tests before he tattoos anybody? he could charge a fiver as a little side earner.

Mr Paul White is a legend, he’s tattooed me many times & the result is always an awesome tattoo.
I am well schooled and have worked in I.T. as a systems engineer for many years.
I also have what I consider to be an above average IQ.
I sincerely hope that “Tramp Stamp” man is joking and deliberately winding people up with his comments. It must be a sad life you lead if otherwise!
These kits are dangerous & nothing but trouble.
Would you let someone with no mechanical experience fix the brakes on you car just ’cause he reckons it should be ok?
Would you let an untrained surgeon perform open heart surgery on someone close to you?
NO! You put your LIFE in the hands of a professional.
Paul White is a very talented, skilled & proud tradesman. A very lovely chap too if I may say so!

Have some respect for someone who spent years learning a trade and setting up his own business doing something he loves. Paul doesn’t need the business sorting out DIY Tattoo’s, he has a very good reputation as a quality Tattooist which is why he’s so popular. I had a DIY Tattoo in Guernsey 28 years ago before anyone opened a Tattoo Studio, Paul covered it up for me when he was starting out, I didn’t know any better at the time so Paul is right to warn people. Remember the old saying “Don’t judge the book by the cover”

i agree they should be banned, there is no guarantee that they are sterile and if manufactured with scrap metal they could contain anything from lead, mercury, barium, even radioactive materials such as cobalt 60.
is it really worth the risk of contracting heavy metal poisoning with a DIY when there are companies who do an expert job with sterile techniques and full aftercare?

I just reread pauls comments and according to him, my IQ should be about 3! 10 tattoos and several piercings apparantly made my brain degenerate and makes my degree worthless. I currently hold down two jobs and have recently completed two certified courses. I think my tatoos actually made me cleverer! lol!!

Leave Paul (white Inc) alone. He is doing what any good parent would do – trying to stop a child from being “scratched”. I have a young teenager who would love a tattoo and I’m sure if she could get hold of one of these kits she would give it a try, she now knows the dangers, I got her to read the article, and she understands that she will have to wait until she is 18 – and have told her under no circumstances is she to do a DIY tat. I do have tattoos, not one of them by Chalky, but I do know him and have done for a very long time. Chalky, I respect what you are doing.

Paul (Chalkie) Give him a break. Same old same old. If you dare speak up about something you get slated. If you say nothing you get slated. Can’t win. Ignore all the bad comments. If their relatives ever get infected by these scratchers they would be the first to complain.

My IQ is Zero, I must be a donut because I have loads of Tattoo’s, Body Piercing and Gold Teeth.

I for one would never ever get a tat doen anywhere ecxept in a clean and trusted studio. I have had the misfortune of seing someone get a home tat, its not a pleasent experiance. Infact I walked out after a very short time as I coulod not believe some of the things I was (or wasnt) seing.
The level of hygiene was awful, with a dog running around the room, who wasnt the cleanest dog, wagging his tale in the colours and walking round with the plastic ink pots in his mouth.
At the end of the day the sensible majority of people must prefer going to a propper studio otherwise White Inc and Black Star would be out of business!!
I was going to say I know where my loyalties lie. . . but its far more than that, I know who I can trust and I know where is better for my health!!
