THE Commerce and Employment Department is investigating why fuel prices in Guernsey have risen more than in the UK.

The announcement came as it emerged that half of the June RPIX figure, which measures the cost of living minus mortgage interest payments, was caused by increases in fuel, light and power, and in motoring.
Both groups motoring and fuel, light and power contributed 0.6% to the 2.4% rise in inflation.
The cost of fuel was not separated in the figures but in Jersey, domestic heating oil has risen by 47% in the past 12 months prompting the island’s Treasury minister, Philip Ozouf, to say that he, too, will carry out his own investigation.

My oil delivery in May 2010 cost 47% more than the same volume delivered in May 2009.
Whilst we are all susceptible to global oil price fluctuations, there is always an uneasy feeling that the Guernsey public is being taken advantage of by greedy oil companies, or greedy distributors or greedy somebody, as the ordinary householder needing an oil delivery has no effective choice other than to pay the price quoted on the day
I wish Commerce and Employment well in their investigations

pyer – I totally agree. if ‘consumer basics’ profit makers can exploit the majority, they will undoubtedly do that, if they can hide in a crowd. milton and simon – you flog petrol and oil then? we need an OUR-type agency to protect ordinary people from monopoly and chancers – these are not luxuries we are discussing – low income households can be chained to the floor by domestic oil and petrol costs. however, i have no faith whatsoever that the blinkered profit-at-any-cost toadies of C & E are the men and woman for the job. (sorry, i do try, but i can’t be reasonable in describing my class enemies).

Nothing to do with the fact the States now owns the oil delivery ships…!
