Merrien on a high and fancies medal

SIX days of European Championships athletics in Barcelona hits the continental television screens today, but as the track and field programme opens Lee Merrien will be some way away, high in the Pyrenees mountains.

The Guernsey runner has to wait until Sunday, the championships’ final day, for his slice of the action in the men’s marathon.

He won’t drive down to Barcelona and reacquaint his blood supply with life at sea level until Friday, but the GB international is determined not to waste five weeks away from his wife and young son and believes he can come home with a medal – or more precisely a team one.
