Two men blinded by caustic screed mix as pump explodes

Wednesday 28th July 2010, 11:30AM BST.

TWO builders were taken to hospital yesterday after a compressor pump exploded in Market Street.

Market Street was cordoned off for some 90 minutes after yesterday’s compressor pump incident. (Picture by Steve Sarre, 1005045)

Ray Green, 46, and a workmate known only as Billy to builders nearby, had been working to pump a sand and cement screed mix three floors up above the Golden Lion, when the compressor’s lid blew off.

It is thought it had been operating at about 80 bars pressure – more than 1,000 pounds per square inch.

Cement blasted into Mr Green and his colleague’s eyes and face. The former was also hit in the stomach as the substance was scattered everywhere.
