Compulsory purchase option is just ‘a very last resort’
Wednesday 11th August 2010, 2:30PM BST.
TREASURY has defended its role in buying up land to the west of the airport to make room for an £80m. runway upgrade.
The States had been accused of using bullying tactics to acquire the fields, pressurising landowners into selling by threatening them with compulsory purchase – and then gagging them from speaking about it.
At the end of July, the States had bought five fields and part fields at a cost of £145,590.
One owner who has land in the area is still refusing to budge to make way for the two-and-a-half year upgrade project.

Good on him! Why should the States have free rain on all the land here, I bet they’ll get building permission at the click of their fingers too!
(btw, I agree with the runway upgrade, but disagree with the new terminal)

The State get free rain? Doesn’t everyone? Although they’ll probably start charging for that as well one day.

GG
You agree with the runway upgrade
The runway upgrade needs the extra land in question
Yet you agree with the landowner refusing to sell
Weird !

Sorry GG bit late to disagree with the new terminal isnt it

Didn’t explain myself very well, I agree the runway needs an upgrade, not an extension. Upgrading it will allow the likes of bigger jets.

1. I own some land
2. States need it
3. Opportunity to make more then its worth?
4. Get GSY Stubborn!
For the record I would do exactly the same as land does get more valuable and why should I loose out.

GG you obviously have no idea do you, bigger jets mean cheaper fares off & on the rock, also does not mean more noise or pollution as they will be up and away even before the noisy aurigny trilanders have reached end of runway let alone out of earshot.

Disbelief, I disbelieve you … bigger jets will not in themselves keep airfares down, competition will.
