PARKING in phase two of the Bouet development will be for residents only, the Housing minister has said, following calls to scrap proposals for private roads.

In a letter to Keith Pike, who voiced neighbours’ concerns, Deputy Dave Jones said that while some private householders might have become accustomed to parking on Le Grand Bouet Estate, in deciding to live in the area they should not have had an expectation that the provision would continue forever.

‘It is planned to apply to the Royal Court to make the closure of these roads permanent and to make parking on the new estate for the benefit of residents only.’

He said planning for new accommodation did not require Housing or the Guernsey Housing Association, which will develop the area on behalf of the States, to make provision for non-residents.

The residents at first tower are worse off, the states took away (without notifying the residents) the parking while they built the new states houses, did they reinstate the parking? did they hell, they yellow lined it! and made it a no parking zone.

This is appalling, States house tenants can have parking in their front garden if needed, look at Braye Road, all those States houses have knocked down their gardens and have parking.

If a local resident who has purchased their own home, has to apply for permission which is usually not granted. The States should be forcing these residents in to bad housing, not building them new houses!

Whether private householders are allowed or not allowed to park in the estate, they will please themselves as usual. The Grand Bouet road is a no parking zone and the private residents are always parked in it and I have never noticed a parking ticket yet. I drive through this road everyday and there is always cars parked in the road obstructing the entrance to the estate. Whether you are a home owner or renting the law is the law try abiding by it. If you decided to buy a home with no parking then thats tough.

It seems to me that more and more street parking is being quietly taken away in St. Peter Port. Is this a ploy by the states to try and get people to get rid of their cars? Some of us have absolutely no choice but to own a vehicle due to the nature of our jobs. The states keep allowing houses to be split up into flats while at the same time reducing parking which leads to real problems just being able to go home because at times there is no where to park so as a last resort some just park on the nearest available yellow line.

Never had parking so the residents were lucky to have it for as long as they did.

Ref Parking at the Grande Bouet.

I think the two important points in all of this are, that the taxpayer is no longer responsible for the upkeep of these estate roads as they become the responsibility of the GHA, saving tens of thousands of pounds from general revenue. One other point is that GHA tenants and partial ownership clients pay for their parking spaces on these new developments. Further we are being told that we are taking parking away, In fact the opposite is true, we have built through the GHA 3 new underground car parks in the last 5 years creating many more parking spaces than ever for those who are entitled to have them and who pay for them through their rental charges, that is if they want a space. They are Roseville, Delancy Court and the Hougue a la Pere (old bus garage site.) I accept it is a difficult position ,however we cannot expect the GHA to finf private parking for possibly as many as 40 residents in the area.
