Ponte makes more history
Wednesday 11th August 2010, 2:30PM BST.
AIMEE PONTE is set to make history as the first girl to represent Guernsey in the junior inter-insular.
In naming his team this week, Guernsey Junior club president Bill Le Huray admitted that: ‘I believe I’m the first person to pick a girl for Guernsey. Jersey I think have done it twice, with Olivia Higgins the most recent.’
Ponte (pictured) was the 2009 island women’s champion when just 13 and she came within a whisker of defending her title this season, losing out at the first extra hole of a thrilling final against Jan Chamberlain.
She will, though, be playing off the white tees rather than the red in the inter-insular.
