CRUISE lines are free to set their own rates for excursions, according to Commerce and Employment.

It has emerged that some are charging passengers up to £50 for a day trip to Herm.

A spokesman for the department’s marketing and tourism section said Guernsey was not involved in the pricing of the shore excursions sold by cruise lines to its passengers.

‘This is purely based on commercial decisions made individually by each line,’ he said.

Obviously it is none of our business how much the cruise lines charge. If alternative providers on Guernsey were to market their services better they might make more money. They need to book excursions online months in advance which is the way cruise lines generally operate.

The cruise ship financial model relies on making profits/receiving commissions from excursion operators. The cruise ships can justify this by the fact that their staff promote and organise the tours when passengers are on board. This is the same the world over.
If Guernsey tries to interfere and regulate the prices charged then the cruise lines very simply will give Guernsey a miss.
Having said that, we need to ensure that passengers are not excessively “ripped off”, so a sensible balance does need to be struck.

I cant believe how much cruise lines charge for shore excursions. Having been on a few cruises myself I cant beleive that cruise lines get away with charging so much. Having spoken to other people at http;//www.Cruises.co.uk forum they all agree that the biggest expense after the cruise itself are shore excursions, which in some cases can add up to more then the actual cruise fare itself.
