Planning law sinks airport boat display
Monday 16th August 2010, 11:30AM BST.

Advertising displays are a major source of revenue for the airport but the boat that has been moored on the forecourt needs planning permission to be on show – which is now being sought. (Picture by Tom Tardif, 1009393)
PUBLIC SERVICES is the latest department to be found contravening planning laws by allowing a boat and a car to be advertised at the airport.
A Yamaha Ribeye has been on display on the central island of the passenger drop-off zone on and off since April.
But following Guernsey Press enquiries it was discovered that appropriate planning permission had not been acquired and the boat was promptly removed.
A spokesman for the department said commercial advertising, such as the display in question and those within the airport terminal, were a valuable and essential source of airport revenue.

Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Environment and Public Services have opened up a complete can of worms with their attack on advertising signs. What about the TV digital changeover notices all over the island?
Let’s hope that common sense prevails.
Petty bureaucracy and jobsworths are taking over this island. It needs to stop NOW!

As an ex pat of Guernsey I feel ashamed of my Island every time I go to the Guernsey Press page I see people are being refused this and that for some stupid and outdated laws, come on states get into the twenty first century and give the Island the continental feel you say it has, relaxed and not like a comunist state

Patti. What an offensive load of old rubbish you talk. And how stupid to say that as an ex-islander you are ashamed of your homeland. So childish. Why do you feel Guernsey should be the same as everywhere else? What rule ( in your book) says that Guernsey has to be brought in-line with everywhere else? Guernsey is beautiful, most liveable, and most desireable as she is (especially without an ‘extended’ airport runway by the way – had to get that one in), and know what? Millions would move to Sania Cherie if they could. Millions upon millions! Communist state indeed. You wouldn’t know one if you fell over one! Same old answer for you though. You didn’t like it, so you moved away. Good.

David. Environment and Public Services have taken correct action re avertising at Guernsey Airport.
Advertising INSIDE – repeat INSIDE – of the confines of the terminal building is acceptable. Erecting advertising signs and placing all other manner of manufactured articles for sale OUTSIDE of the building is not acceptable. What’s next? Flashing neon signs directing incoming passengers to the nearest red-light district?! Indeed, those who keep attempting to turn Guernsey into another ugly mini-city should spread their tiny wings and fly away.

Whatever happened to discretion and common sense. The Environment Dept. seem to have neither of them; this lovely Island is getting blighted by their fetish for following the letter of the law to the nth degree. It is very depressing.

Geezerboy – which school did you go to mate ? Please take care with your spelling.

Geezerboy – no need to shout…. Has anyone noticed that a lot of recent topics that have been headline grabbing (signs in wrong place, kids riding on pavements and shock, horror in the park etc etc I could go on) have been quite successful in diverting peoples’ attention from important island-wide topics such as waste management/island’s economy etc…. New States strategy to disguise the fact that the mis-management of this island has increased year on year…?

Surely there was enough rules about what you could and could not do when the Germans were here, but I think, these petty minded overpaid bureaucratic for want of a better word oafs have forgotten that the wars some people fought and died for was for freedom, and if that is all they have to think about whilst sitting on there shiny arsed suits then get rid as there are more important issues.
As for loads of people wanting to come and live here how many actually would if we did not have cheap tax (cheap for the rich that is)

I have to admit at first I thought what a load of nonsense having to remove A boards from your premises and to be fair I find the town looks bare, but you have to understand the real reason behind all this and imagine how difficult it is for the partially sighted and wheelchair users, it must be a nightmare. I am a grandmother and take the children to town in a buggy quite often and never found these boards a problem but I am quite sure others do,so if it is for the blind and disabled only thats commendable but if it is for any other reason I think they should review the situation.

I liked seeing the rib outside the Airport, set a tone of ‘island life’.
I like poking a look at any cars inside.
I did not like seeing a car outside, not the same as seeing the boat. That looked ‘cheap’.
In ether case the for sale details could be kept discreet. Other than that fine by me to see them at the Airport.

o well next thing is going to be cant put for sale signs in your car i spouse yes do feel we are getting dictated to

This is bureaucracy at its most petty. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that rib parked there, I actually think it was good parked outside arrivals, reminding visitors where they are.
Next thing we’ll see is the stories in the press about the airport is losing money and how inefficient it is etc etc!
The question is…. when this comes out will anyone at the custard castle actually put 2&2 together!
I dont understand in the era of “tightening out belts” credit crunch, zero-10 etc etc, why the airport is forced to lose out on advertising revenue!?!

Can the environment dept now investigate whether the TV Dig signs got planning permission as they are extremely distracting and does that have to be sooo many one or two yes but when you drive along to my mind it really is an overkill. What a waste of my TV Licence money…I also like seeing the boat every time i drove by the airport it was in a nice place.
