MORE than £6,500-worth of stolen mobile telephones was recovered by police using information from the Force Intelligence Bureau last year.

And the Technical Support Unit has warned islanders to be cautious with their smartphones as reports emerge of criminals targeting them nationally.

As a result of the intelligence provided by the bureau, Detective Inspector Phil Breban said 2009’s recoveries ranged from narcotics including heroin and cannabis to stolen property such as jewellery, cash, clothing, and cigarettes.

‘A large proportion of the value of the telephones recovered related to someone stealing them from his place of employment – and the rest were from other cases,’ he said.
