‘One-stop’ waste park to deal with sewage too

Tuesday 17th August 2010, 2:30PM BST.

Dick BilboroughA CUSTOM-BUILT, all-in-one waste park with a sewage treatment plant is being proposed for Guernsey.

Dick Bilborough (pictured), an industrial and agricultural machinery expert from the UK, along with a team of eight as yet unnamed local backers, has put forward the plans for the Longue Hougue site.

The Guernsey Press has been given exclusive access to the proposed scheme.

Mr Bilborough, 79, said the idea was to use as much local community input as possible and existing Guernsey businesses to achieve what the Public Services Department had not: a one-stop waste solution which would be backed by islanders.

As Mr Bilbourough has be mentioned in the GP previously as Island Waste’s business development manager.
Its not to difficult to work out who some of the backers are.

If thats the best he can come up with after 10 years of research at the top levels of the waste industry.
I would suggest a change of career.

A technology driven solution will never be a solution, without ownership by islanders, waste management does not work. I am a waste manager, professionally qualified, experience in 10 different countries and over 15 years of experience and this is what I have observed.

Tony Soprano was in the waste management business. Maybe he could sort out the cyclists and other problems at the same time. Worth a call?

To me this sounds like an excellent idea. It reduces State spending, keeps everything in one place and the local businesses that are already doing such a good job are allowed to continue. Just for once lets have a positive response from the ‘powers that be’ instead of the usual instant rejection of any idea that smacks of being a bit radical and modern.

I think it is a great suggestion, but of course needs careful investigation first. However, on the face of it, it seems to be providing all that we need.
It is high time that our sewage was treated, we need to continue to encourage recycling & we need some means of disposing of those items that cannot be recycled.
We are also in need of a new abattoir & having all these facilities, especially on one site at hopefully no vast cost sounds wonderful. I give it my full backing – providing it works!
So let’s hope the States look at it seriously & do not just ignore it.
