Farewell to ‘a true daughter of Guernsey’
Wednesday 18th August 2010, 2:29PM BST.
MORE than 150 people paid their respects yesterday at the funeral of ‘a true daughter of Guernsey’.
Marie de Garis, who died last week aged 100, spent most of her life trying to protect the island’s native language and culture.
The service at St Peter’s Church featured a hymn sung in Guernsey French – the same one that had been used at the funeral of her husband, Wilfred, who died suddenly in 1962. La Guaine du Vouest provided choral support.
Rector of St Peter’s, the Rev. Maurice Strike, told the congregation that the service would remember Mrs de Garis’ life, achievement and example.
‘She was a true daughter of Guernsey and with her passing we have lost a protector and guardian of our culture and heritage,’ he said.
