THE West Show is on.

Yesterday it was the turn of the horse-riding community only but today the gates are open to everyone.

And despite a gloomy weather forecast earlier in the week, showgoers now risk just a light shower.

The annual show, held at the former L’Eree aerodrome, will see the return of competitions such as flower arranging, fruit and vegetable and farm produce classes and children’s and adults’ arts and crafts.

Entries will be on display in the exhibition tents and will be judged this morning.

I love the west show, I enjoy looking at all of the things that go on in the arena and the other things while there is the fun-fair witch people can also enjoy but the prices are quite high.

I cant wait for another fun time this year!

I was down at the show today. Yup, a great show….. the organisers do a great job. However I was REALLY disappointed to see that once again we have a big gathering of the Guernsey community, and the (plentiful) rubbish bins are just that……. rubbish bins full of waste and recyclates.

After all these years of talking about having a waste problem, and fretting about how quickly Mont Cuet is filling up, and we still haven’t figured out that reducing the amount of waste that is generated, will slow down the rate of fill at the tip. Recycling is not something that we should be doing only when it suits us…… it should be 100% of the time. There should be NO public bins in Guernsey….. anywhere, that do not also have recycling bins alongside that take cans, plastic and paper. I find it extraordinary that we still haven’t got that sorted! Making recycling a totally automatic habit for all of us will never happen while is is treated as such an irrelevance.

In fact, there were recycling bins on the site….. but only 2 and no request to use them. Unless you actively looked for them, or by chance stumbled across them, you wouldn’t have known.

I hope next year that the organisers will aim for a zero waste show and those organizing the North Show next week will also make sure that recycling bins are as plentiful as rubbish bins.
