Movie buffs demand a better cinema

Wednesday 18th August 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Film reelFILM fans in Guernsey say there is a real need for a multiplex on their doorstep.

Moviegoers were asked for their views following a call last week from Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara to know what had happened to plans for a cinema at Admiral Park.

The building of a retail and leisure facility, including a cinema and filling station, on land adjoining Sydney Vane House was approved in principle in 2005. That permission, which fell within the Bouet mixed use redevelopment area, has now expired and has not been renewed.

Islanders and visitors spoken to said that while they used the island’s only cinema, The Mallard, a new state-of-the art facility near Town was long overdue. Others also felt film fans were missing out on the chance to see some of the latest blockbusters.

I agree that Guernsey NEEDS a new cinema complex. On the 3 occasions that I’ve visited the Mallard in 2010, the image on the screen has been fuzzy, and I have lost feeling in my backside by the end of each film due to poor seating.

At the very least, people should be able to go to a movie on a Sunday evening and not have to fork out for a taxi (with hiked up Sunday prices) to get home because bus services have ceased for the day. Why should the movies be accessible only to those with cars?

I think that better cinema facilities are needed on the island. The Mallard does its best but it is not particularly easy to get to, the films are limited and the facilities need upgrading.

I hate not actually being able to see the screen, as I’m usually sat behind someone taller than I am, or someone who can’t sit still (although I empathise there as the seats are horribly uncomfortable). I’m all for championing a local business, but in truth, I never go to the Mallard anymore. I’d rather wait until the movie I want to see comes on Sky Box Office or in Blockbuster…
