New chief plans for more police on the streets
Wednesday 18th August 2010, 1:00PM BST.
THE new chief officer of Guernsey Police wants to put more bobbies on the beat.
And he said big savings could be made by working more closely with the States.
Patrick Rice (pictured) was sworn in by the Royal Court yesterday.
He said one of the biggest challenges facing the force was the constraint on public spending. Mr Rice expected budgets to be tight for the next 10 years and said different bodies would have to work together to make savings.
‘What I do see is closer collaboration between police and other government departments around how we can share cash and do things together.’

Maybe the new Chief can sort out the mess that appears to surround our Sergent Priest here in Alderney?
The ‘complaint’ against him is some 10 months old and once again his hearing has been postponed whilst he languishes uselessly, on full pay and with no idea about his future.
He is in limbo and so is policing in Alderney.
Has the new chief been left a poisoned chalice?

More Bobbies is good if they come from an educated background and preferably not ex forces.

Andy – I trust you are not suggested that ex-forces personnel are uneducated? Many are well educated and extremely skilled. I think ex-forces people are often ideal for police work: well trained, disciplined, used to being in and under authority, able to handle extreme pressure, trained to defend themselves etc. etc. OK some training to adjust from army life to civilian police work might be required but it seems to me that with a good ex-soldier many of the foundations of a good police officer are already there.
Besides, although important, education isn’t everything and I’d rather see some experienced ex-soldiers on the beat that a force full of wet behind the ears graduates who haven’t experienced the rough end of life.
