Marina pontoons to get a £1m. upgrade
Thursday 19th August 2010, 2:29PM BST.
NEW pontoons could soon be floating in the Town marinas as part of a £1m. programme.
Hundreds are being replaced and refurbished as part of a five-year scheme.
Harbour master Captain Peter Gill said some of the existing platforms were 20 years old or more, and it was hard to judge what state they were in.
‘We don’t know the life of a pontoon,’ he said. ‘We don’t know how many we will have to replace. We will be lifting them out of the water to inspect all of them.’

I see Guernsey is spending for the wealthy again
Report abuse
Matt
What do you mean “again”, when did it stop?
It would also be spending for the tourists in victoria marina. If something happened to one of the pontoons when a visitor was staying they would go back to where they were from and give Guernsey a bad review.

It appears ignorance prevails once again!
I seem to remember a week or two ago there was a feature in the Press about the role of the Harbours and just how nuch revenue that is raised annually by the marinas, I think it was in the region of £3.5 million. Spending £1 million over 5 years seems reasonable considering the income generated.
More ignorant comments it is not only the wealthy who have there boats in the mariners its a lot of normal working men whom have the boats as there hobby.
could this mean theres a department that is runing inside there budget? i agree with matthew and John
Report abuse
‘Working men’ with boats as a hobby? That is a pretty expensive hobby John!
Dave – if a working man wants to spend his hard earned on a boat, what’s it to you?
Incidentally I know such men who are not, by any stretch of the imagination, wealthy – by Guernsey standards at least.
Dave
I had a boat for years and i am certainly not wealthy.
Paul,
You are right, it is none of my business, however as a tax payer I do have an interest and in my opinion the money could be better spent elsewhere unless the work is deemed absolutely essential.
BCB,
I reckon you would be loaded if you got rid of your boat :). However, point taken.
No arguments on that point Dave
Report abuse
i have a small boat it dont cost the earth and i am in one of the bays so please dont asume .and if people have boats and chosse to spend there money on morining fees there paying for these repairs in the long run .

Dave
Don’t trot out the old “ooo I’m a taxpayer” tripe.
The Harbour Authority, or whatever they’re called now, don’t get any taxpayer’s money.
I just spent my bonus from a certain investment bank on my new Targa 44 OK it was £270K but I do not regard myself as rich. I work very hard for it and have to spend numerous nights in the west end entertaining clients etc etc. My boat is moored at the QE2 north beach and the pontoon is very dirty not much good when your friends get their feet dirty when entertaining on board. replace the pontoons please and do it quickly its a wise investment and I know a bit investing hence my bonus.

Can’t work out whether Lodgewood it a wind up merchant or not!!!

lodgewood
Its good to see that you getting properly rewarded for your hard work! Not only that but your generating wealth within the economy by spending your hard earned cash!! Good on you ;-)
Billythefish,
I thought the Guernsey Harbour Authority was run by the Public Services Departmen so where do PSD get there money from?
Dave
Doesn’t take a lot of gov.gg trawling to pick up that you’re right that Guernsey Harbours (as they are called) are part of PSD, but it’s only the waste bits of psd that get taxpayer funding (it’s called general revenue). The Guernsey Harbours do not. See page 90 of the last States annual accounts for enlightenment!
Assuming you accept the above, then the argument of others that it’s a good investment holds.
Yours..the “legendary” BTF

I stand duly corrected!

@ LODGEWOOD
Don’t brag. Pay for your own pontoon if you have so much money.
Lyn,
If I could take the marinas into private ownership I would. There is a massive opportunity for any investor not just me. I do not think the states would sell though. I am not bragging either just telling it as it is. I would rather give my attention to local charities if as you say I have too much money but I sense the jealousy in your comment.
@Lodgewood
Not at all jealous. well done to you for being abale to afford a luxury yacht / cruiser. Just don’t brag about it.
Lyn, if he’s had his pontoon for a while, then, in mooring fees he’s already paid for it, and that’s the point that some people are making here: That his fees and the fees of mooring holder HAS paid in triplicate for the upgrade to old pontoons in need of repair. And they are bad (the pontoons) The wood is really on-it’s last legs and it’s better economy to replace then waste on repair.
