SARK does not have fire regulations for rented properties but that is likely to change in the future, the island’s chief fire officer has said.

The disclosure came after a man died in a house fire early on 1 August.

Hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts must comply with fire regulations that require working smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors.

But Sark officials confirmed there were currently no regulations relating to rented properties.

There was no suggestion that such measures could have prevented the recent blaze and chief fire officer Kevin Adams said a knee-jerk reaction to the incident would be wrong.

Every house / apartment should be equipped with at least one CO detector on each floor. Cheapest life insurance you’ll ever get. I got this one for my house First Alert CO alarm and it’s really good.
