OLYMPIC swimmer Duncan Goodhew and his friend Michael James have become the first men to swim around the Casquets Lighthouse.

The intrepid duo decided to take on the treacherous waters eight miles off Alderney while drinking in an island pub. Mr James said he wanted to swim round a rock, so Mr Goodhew suggested they take on an area famous for wrecking numerous vessels.

Several islanders and tourists heard what they were planning and pledged £2,000 to Alderney Cancer Relief if they completed the swim.

Several local fishermen advised the pair not to even attempt the stunt but Mr Goodhew and Mr James were determined. And thanks to their daredevil spirit, the duo completed the hazardous challenge in just 27 minutes.
