Police in retreat at drunken tile thrower’s £8,500 pier mayhem

Friday 20th August 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Robert BatisteA FATHER-TO-BE caused more than £8,500-worth of damage on the Crown Pier after he had argued with another man in Town.

Robert Batiste, 27, of no fixed address, climbed on to the roof of the toilet/shower block from where he tore off roof tiles and threw them at police vehicles.

A roof tile struck one of the officers, Sergeant John Tostevin, as he retreated, causing a small cut to his leg.

Batiste (pictured) pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to four counts of causing criminal damage to police vehicles for which prison sentences of one year, concurrent, were imposed on each.

In June, Batiste had been subject to a community service order as a direct alternative to six weeks in prison. This was revoked and the prison sentence activated consecutively, meaning he will serve one year and six weeks in prison.

Batiste must also pay £1,900 in compensation to the Home Department and £100 to Sergeant Tostevin.
