Bulk mailers back stand-in Post boss

Saturday 21st August 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Boley SmiliePROGRESS made under Guernsey Post’s interim chief executive shows that he should be made permanent, according to the Guernsey Bulk Mailers’ Association.

‘It is obvious the progress that has already been achieved in the very short time he has been in charge, including the vast amount of money that would have been wasted on litigation,’ said GBMA chairman Rodney Brouard, who wants acting CEO Boley Smillie (pictured) to remain in the job.

OUR director-general John Curran appeared to agree.

‘From our perspective, the change has helped, we have a very good working relationship with Boley. We are now in a very different situation and have had very positive meetings with Guernsey Post over the past few weeks,.’

Best get all the back slapping over with before the redundancies are announced ( unless we are somehow different to the Jersey set up)

With reference to the continuing saga of the OUR and their constant attacks on the post office – today’s headlines about pay and Post Office staff really shows the determination of Curran with enthusiastic support from certain deputies who seem to think he can do no wrong, a couple of questions and or points spring to mind.
Firstly whilst Curran is very quick to point the finger at others I would like to know the levels of salary he and his empire of regulators are paid – I suspect we might be horrified.

The second key point, and I quote “this is deinitely not sustainable (wage costs) with competition coming in…………….” is a bit rich as it is Curran himself who has been imposing this competition on the Post Office, in case he can’t work at the level of us lower mortals – he is very close to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. How happy will we be when we get a third rate service. Remember this is the chap who seriously tried to sell the idea of one post office in the Island as the distance to travel to Envoy house from anywhere in the Island was within the travelling distance minimum required in the UK! It really is about time the politicians faced up to this totally destructive empire that has succeeded by regulation in giving us the most expensive internet charges in the British Islands, an Electricity company that has had to spend millions in fighting the imposition of “regulation” etc etc and now the potential destruction of the Post Office – let alone the damage that may be caused to local aviation once he (Curran) gets the powers to grant licences for operators to fly to and from the Island.

In the old days if a States department started to get out of line Islanders could challenge the Deputies who were on the relevant boards, but of course now there is no control – and we are not better off because of it!
