TO BE the first man to win both the Guernsey and the Jersey marathons.

That is the aim of Garry Payne of Nuneaton when he travels to the island next week to take part in this year’s Sportingbet Guernsey Marathon.

The 53-year-old long distance specialist won the Jersey event in 2006, but this year has his eyes set on a time of 2-35.00 in Guernsey and is an early favourite to take the individual men’s title.

‘I prefer to run in hot conditions so this event could be perfect for me,’ said Payne, who has been competing for 20 years and heard about the event from race director Peter Head at the London Marathon Expo.
