A £4M. project to upgrade Belle Greve pumping station will improve treatment of the island’s sewage but more work could be needed, according to Guernsey Water director of water services Andrew Redhead.

Some parts of the current plant are so old that recent replacements could be found only on eBay.

Plans for the work, due to begin towards the end of next year, are being drawn up by consultants and it is hoped that the project will go out to tender soon and be completed in 2012.

Currently, waste is treated in closed tanks close to the bay.
