First day of North Show washed out

‘Buddy Holly’ – West End performer Matthew Wycliffe – was singing in the rain at the North Show yesterday.

WET weather washed out the first day of the North Show yesterday, leaving many stallholders and islanders disappointed.

The continuous rain put many people off, leaving local charities, companies and food vans with little custom.

Half of the farmers’ market stalls had closed before 1pm and some events were forced to relocate to the beer tent.

North Show president Simon Marquis said the rain had been a shame.

‘I’m sure it did put a few people off, but hopefully when people finish work we will have a few more people coming up.’

I’m a bit dissappointed in the North Show committee for their decision to appoint such a young president.

I do hope that he does a good job, or the people of Guernsey will suffer if the Show collapses….

i`ve said it before, and i shall say it again, if it wasnt such a crazy price to park your car and overpriced entry fee then loads more people would go, wether it was raining or not, from the people ive spoken to, the rain didnt stop them going it was the price!

Would an older person have been able to stop the rain?

Phil – Not that I am aware of, why do you ask?

My point was conerning his age and his character/ability to lead the committee effectively.

Do you know someone who can control the weather?

No, that’s my point. The article implied that the weather was the cause of the problems, however you seem to think it’s the age of the committee president.

Phil – Thank you for clarifying the intent of the article for me.

I never started that the age of the president caused the foul weather.

I question the ability and character of such a young person to effectiuvely lead the show. Thats why I wrote what i wrote. I didnt write what you have queried and thats why i didnt write it.

    This does seem very complicated.

I also didnt say lots of other things, shall I list them for you?

You are clearly missing the point i was trying to raise in the first place.

Concerned Guern – Like the old saying goes “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.”

May I also remind you of Alan Hansen’s famous comment about Manchester United at the start of the 1995-6 Premier League season: “You won’t win anything with kids.” United then went on to win the double and Mr Hansen was left with egg on his face….for the sake of the North Show I hope you emulate Mr Hansen.

Oh, and “do you know someone who can control the weather?” – Yeah, God!

I just love the fact that, as usual, within 8 comments on a TIG thread the discussion diverts completely from the original subject! Simple issue as far as I am concerned – you cannot do anything about the weather but as a family of four we could not afford £24 in gate fees especially when the likelihood is that our young children will not want to stay for long in the rain – if the gate prices had been reduced and advertised on, say Island Fm, then i suspect more would have popped down there for an hour or so. There is also the issue of extra expenses once inside – £3 for 5 mins on a bouncy castle anyone? I reckon the committee should re-look at how much they charge the fair managers…

Thanks Blah :) Phil, perhaps the answer lies in Mum22′s post? Maybe God was protecting more people from paying the high entrance fees?! ;-)

As far as I am aware the Jersey Battle of Flowers cost a lot more and you are going to pay £20 plus per person to get into a similar show in the UK. At the end of the day costs need to be covered!

I actually thought the show was good value for money and I have heard similar comments from other people.

The problem this year was the weather and you can do nothing about that !

Dear Concerned Guern. You must bear with me, as I am but a simple country boy me and computers are as confusing as a sober Jerseyman, but I feel compelled to write in support of the boy Marquis who is the President of the North Show as reading your post gave me one of me “cor, la!” moments. My friend from the North parish to the Vale tells me that the boy Marquis is the son of the former 25 yer plus committee member and president of the show, Bob Marquis and that the boy Marquis has helped at the show since he were a nipper. Bearing in mind the boy Marquis looks around 37 yers old (still much younger than me, eh?) I figure he must have been to that show for nigh on 25 yers or more, learning all about it, eh. I think with that kind of commitment to an island cause, he is more than qualified to be up the park running the show. I believe too that the committee has to vote for the president eh. Good on him I say. The weather was awful, but the show was wonderful, as always. If you are that concerned, Concerned Guern, they I guess you should get on the committee too!

To everyone else regarding the prices, eh; I am guessing me, and again, forgive a simple country boy, but it must cost money to put a show on like that. I mean, pigs don’t run around muck for free, eh? I reckon with the rain this yer, they would have not made much money. So, rather than complain about the prices to get in, we need to support what has been an island institution for 100 yers and more and get up to the park next summer, come rain or shine. You either pay to get in, or shinny up the edge like what we did yers ago!

Damme, I started writing this just after me tea, me. Bloney tired now. Thanks

    Samuel Joseph

I`m afraid it`s a sign of the times when everything is too expensive. Still it`s only an old fashioned show that has past it`s sell by date and judging by the last ten years entries lacks any imagination or effort to produce descent floats. These shows have had it and the only one to recognise it has been The South Show that now only has the produce competitions and flower shows which are indoors and well attended. Even The West Show is struggling and within the next five years will realise it`s time to call it a day.

Peter – The Viaer Marche seems to do pretty well and that’s pretty old fashioned.

Still, I’m inclined to agree to a point, but it would be a shame to lose the show. It’s a bit of a tourist pull and part of island culture. I recall reading a suggestion that the shows merged into one annual event. I’m inclined to think that’s a pretty good idea and worth considering.

Mum22 has a very good point. I went on the Thursday afternoon despite the atrocious weather.

I had to pay £18 to take my two young girls which was double the price I would expect to pay for what was on offer.

I would not want to lose the north show but scale it down or do whatever it takes to make it more affordable to families and the ordinary Guern in the street.

I hope the ‘Committee’ are listening.
