HEATHER WATSON fell at the first hurdle of US Open qualifying yesterday.

The reigning Junior US Open girls’ champion was attempting to reach the senior main draw for the first time, but came unstuck against Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino in New York.

After a rain delayed start to day two of qualifying at Flushing Meadow, 18-year-old Watson began strongly on court 12, claiming the first set 6-2 in 45 minutes.

However, her more-experienced opponent, who is ranked 151 in the world compared to Watson at 216, fought back in the 54-minute second set to win it 6-4and take the match into a decider.
