‘We cannot afford rain next year’

North show & battle of flowersTHE future of the North Show could end up under threat after heavy rain devastated this year’s event.

Many people had already labelled Wednesday a washout and with another downpour yesterday afternoon, committee members were left counting the effect on this year’s takings.

North Show president Simon Marquis said the weather could affect the show’s future. This year’s show cost just under £100,000 to stage.

‘It will have a large effect and we will make a loss. But at this stage we have no idea how much,’ he said. ‘It’s devastating, especially because so much hard work goes into this. We do have a small amount in our reserves to allow us to put a show on next year but we will be suffering after that if we have wet weather next year.’

Is it not about time that all the parishes got together at one venue, make it a week long attraction with all the different aspects from each show, and priced right something like a two pound entry or eight pound week pass then you might, just might see the crowds of years ago.

Stone, is there a big enough location for that though?

A huge disappointment for the North Show Committee and everyone involved with putting this fine event together.

StoneDeCroze’s proposal would not resolve any problems created by bad weather of course, whichever way the event were structured, but maybe his suggestion merits some consideration.

When the marquees disappeared from the South Show several years ago, I also felt that a consolidated island-wide Show should be the way forward, possibly alternating the venue each year.

A week-long event would be far too long though, particularly for the produce being exhibited that I suspect would be past its sell-by date towards the tail end of the show. Maybe three days could be a reasonable compromise?

I was helping on a stall at the north show and it was an absolute disgrace that us farmers market people were put in the back car park and we were just forgotten about. The people who were in the main north show were part of the show and we just didn’t feel as we were a part of the show. Most of the people in the farmers market barely made any money because of the weather and where we were put as people were coming in they would say we’ll have a look after but when they came back they had no money, they were tired or they had kids who were moaning and screaming so they just wanted to go home!! I’m only 14 and i know that this day was not a day that the farmers market want to remember and if they do remember it they’ll call it the mud bath north show for those 2 days.

maddie – this was the north show, not the ‘right- on’ farmers’ market show. you were there mostly to make profit i presume, not to advance the fortunes of the north show, which has been around in guernsey donkeys years before fashionable middle class pumpkin pie hobby producers? you cannot always be sheltered under fairfields and manor houses.
