The Bowl ‘needs rent to help keep it viable’

Saturday 28th August 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Harry O'NeillRENTAL apartments are needed at the The Bowl to help keep the business viable, according to its general manager.

The property at the end of Victoria Avenue currently has three apartments on the second floor used as staff accommodation.

But repeated attempts to increase the amount of residential space for rental purposes there have so far been refused.

Now general manager Harry O’Neill (pictured) has submitted a scaled-down version. He has applied for two one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments, which, he says, would provide vital income.

Get rid of O M Local market housing and let the island find its true level . People want to invest in Guernsey and don’t because the islanders in the past have been greedy and sold the notion that a two tier market would protect locals LOL if you `still believe that

The Bowl is the textbook example of why large, dedicated fringe facilities such as The Bowl are not economically viable for Guernsey. As soon as the novelty wears off, the number of punters decreases until only a few hardcore regulars are left, with others visiting perhaps one a year or so.

In a larger population area (such as a UK town) this wouldn’t be a problem as there would be a catchment area large enough to sustain the facility, which in all likelihood would also be in an attractive area with a cinema, restaurants etc. in close proximity.

Sad though it is, I cannot see much future for The Bowl unless it manages to diversify its operation or bowling suddenly becomes popular again – either that or they find a Man City style wealthy sugar daddy.

Finally, I would also suggest that those clamouring for other dedicated fringe facilities such as a permenant ice rink take note.

Maybe you’ve just identified the ideal site for a new cinema!

David, yes perhaps so. Having a leisure “estate” such as you see in the UK is definitely worth considering, with a cinema, bowling alley, eateries, arcade etc.

I wonder if by doing that you are more likely to attract the occasional punter who is “in the area” to watch a movie.
