‘To say this estate is safe is ridiculous’

A SAFETY inspection by the Guernsey Press counted 150 vehicle movements in the Pitronnerie Road industrial estate at the time children would be using it as part of Living Streets’ Baubigny schools walking route.

Last week the road safety group offered to take the media on an inspection of the estate after criticism from businesses there that it was unsafe for children to use. It later cancelled the tour.

Living Streets secretary Pat Wisher maintained that although she recommended children got to the route via Victoria Avenue, the estate was safer than the surrounding roads.

On Thursday, the Guernsey Press held its own inspection. Reporters at both entrances to the estate counted vehicles as they passed between 8am and 8.30am – the time children would be likely to walk to school. The findings, which showed the passing of around 70 vehicles at each end, were similar to the study conducted by Living Streets, which averaged two vehicle movements per minute.

What also needs to be factored into the equation is the the estate is private. Those that are late for work will race through the estate purely for this reason alone. I am not sure if any legal enforcement could be implemented to prevent this?

High proportions of heavy goods vehicles & children are not a good mix when safety is at the heart of the matter.

I am surprised the planners of the new Bouet estate could not put something together that incorporates a drop off & collection point for the students & their parents.

Maybe even a track for a road train leading to & from the site.
