Business never recovered after roadworks – shop owner

ANOTHER specialist independent shop is set to fold citing a ‘vicious circle’ of trading problems.
Eurasia Stores at Les Banques will close at the end of November. The shop, which stocks foods from places such as Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and China, opened in June 2008. But now owner Steve Plumley, 50, is shutting up shop for good due to ‘a number of factors’. He claims most stemmed from last year’s major road closures along Vale Road and the seafront.
‘People were taking the diversion round the back and we lost a lot of passing trade. From then on it was a slippery slope.’ Business during that time, said Mr Plumley (pictured), fell by 60%. The aftermath also left him unable to restock many items.
‘Because our trade went down quite considerably, we did not have the cashflow to order in the specialist foods from across the world.’

Sorry to hear these people are shutting up shop, but it is a bit unfair to use road closures etc., lots of other Shopkeepers who have been trading on the Island for most of their lives, have either moved or had no alternative but to close due to lack of business, this was a specialised delicattessen which at the time of opening many had reservations, surely this is a City Business, not an Island of our size. Best of luck for their future, but suggest trying a larger Area.
