RETAILERS say fewer plastic bags than ever are being used in Guernsey.
Two years on from the introduction of an island-wide scheme which saw the end of free plastic bags at supermarkets, one local retailer has seen bag usage fall by almost 70%.
Another major chain is looking at other ways to continue to build on the success.
The bag-charging scheme, launched on 6 May 2008, saw major food retailers agree to charge 5p a carrier and more for a stronger, reusable ‘bag for life’.

Bring the charge in across the board…. as is being done in California. We will soon get into the habit of taking a bag with us when we go to town.. Surely, being a species, intelligent and creative enough to create the developed world that we have, it is not beyond us to remember to take a shopping bag with us!
The negative impact of single use plastic carrier bags far out weigh the convenience they offer.
