Legal aid system under pressure, the Bailiff warns

THE courts and legal aid system are being put under increasing pressure by the rising number of cases, the Bailiff has warned.
Sir Geoffrey Rowland was speaking at the Court of Chief Pleas, held at St James yesterday.
The sitting is a chance for the Bailiff to address the island’s advocates and court officials on important issues.
Sir Geoffrey said the number of cases being dealt with by the courts had risen by a fifth in the last few years.
