OK, SO maybe I’m a tad biased but Paul Weller was awesome on Sunday.
Even those who had never seen him live came away saying he was amazing.
Strutting on stage, the epitome of mod cool on the final night, with not a moment to tease his silver, coiffured barnet, it was straight into 1996 hit Peacock Suit.
From there on the hits kept coming as he plundered the back catalogue: I counted four Jam songs and one Style Council tune among the 20-song set. He played six or seven from latest album Wake Up the Nation. He may have lost the Mercury Prize for the LP, but he won many fans at Jersey Live.
‘It’s great to be back here…’ he said, mid-set (his last time in Jersey was in 1982 with The Jam, a day before he played Guernsey, just before the band split) ‘…but I can remember when all this was fields,’ and he pointed across Trinity showground.
Oh, how we laughed.
Highlights included a funky version of Into Tomorrow, a stirring Pretty Green, he also played You Do Something to Me on piano and even the weird and wonderful Trees from the new LP worked. Weller had the crowd in the palm of his hand before he announced the final number, Town Called Malice, with what seemed like everyone in the place singing along.
They could probably hear us in St Helier.
It was sublime.
