FORMER Commonwealth Games cyclist Manny Helmot has been awarded a UK record one-off damages payment of almost £14m.

The Guernsey Court of Appeal yesterday upheld his appeal and increased the £9.3m. awarded by the Royal Court in January.

The award was so high as the ability to pay in instalments, most commonly used for personal injury claims in the UK, was not available in Guernsey.

Delivering the court’s decision, Judge Jonathan Sumption, QC, said the problems associated with lump sum awards were well known and had been much discussed.
