Deputies want a say in new law priorities
Wednesday 15th September 2010, 2:29PM BST.
ISLANDERS who want new animal welfare legislation brought in more quickly are being encouraged to lobby deputies to support an amendment designed to give politicians more power to prioritise laws.
Promoting Animal Welfare (PAW) held a public meeting at St Margaret’s Lodge last night to ask for people’s ideas about how to put pressure on the authorities to bring in the new law.
Animal rights campaigners are frustrated that new legislation, agreed by the States seven years ago, has still not been enacted. Some deputies have said that there is very little they can do to speed up its implementation because it is now with the law officers and not in the hands of politicians.
Deputies Mike Hadley (pictured) and Rhoderick Matthews outlined their amendment to the States Strategic Plan, which they said would give politicians a bigger say in which legislation was prioritised. The amendment has been sent to the Bailiff and they hope it will be discussed in September’s States meeting.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
I when to the meeting last night, i am a 100% behind the Animal Law coming into place in Guernsey. But I didn’t think much about the people run this campaign. They didn’t know what to say. Sue didn’t say much, and she is the leader!!!
Also why didn’t the GSPCA or the vets come??

I turn up to the PAW meeting. What can i say, sue didn’t talk to the public. But she happy to print photos and info in the press.
I think, a different person should head up this campaign.

I think that it is quite incredible that there are currently no deputies on the prioritisation of legislation working party – I.e. effectively no public representation – I would suggest writing to deputies to ask them, as our elected representatives, to support the Matthews/Hadley amendment. This would potentially make lobbying for the progression of any law possible whereas at present only civil servants who are not democratically elected sit on this panel.
