THE Guernsey Powerboat Association safety team were hailed as ‘outstanding’ by several members after their speedy reactions prevented any major problems in the North Beach Inner Race on Sunday.

The race begins at North Beach harbour and goes as far as Belle Greve Bay before finishing in the harbour mouth.

Ian Main, navigator aboard ‘Diablo Racing’, was unexpectedly flung into the sea after his vessel hit a freak wave, known in the sport as ‘tripping over’.

However, he was rescued by the safety boat and was heading for the slipway within a minute of the incident.

Main admitted to blacking out briefly during the episode, but after a quick hospital check he was able to head back down to the event and was full of praise for the way the incident was handled.
