LEE MERRIEN heads off to the Pyrenees this weekend with a new all-comers’ record to his name.

In good conditions at Foote’s Lane last evening the distance star beat off strong opposition in Aldershot and Farnham’s Jonny Hay to lower the 3,000m all-comers best by more than eight seconds to 8min. 6.2sec.

It improved, by more than 11sec., his previous best for the distance on local soil, and shows he is in good shape a couple of weeks before the Commonwealth Games.

Needing to run a 58sec. last lap to beat his own island record of 8-00.51, he did not quite have the sharpness in his legs to challenge that time.
