Moores angered by Pollet weekend ‘curfew’

MOORES Hotel has hit out at a late-night Lower Pollet traffic ban which launches tonight saying it will place a ‘curfew’ on its guests.
The four-week trial closure of the road will face its first test this evening when more than 100 people attending a function at the Town centre hotel will have to walk to the taxi rank instead of being picked up from outside.
Moores is disappointed by the lack of notice from Environment and has had its requests both for an urgent rethink and to change the times of the ban rejected.
The scheme will see the road shut to traffic from 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights after a request from police on pedestrian-safety grounds.

What so usually there would be a hundred cabs all milling around Moores? I would have thought that most people would walk down the hill to the taxi rank if they were getting a cab surely…?
I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. The road is closed between 11.30pm and 3am…is it really going to cause that many problems?

The road will be closed except for Police, Fire and Ambulance
Would it hurt to also exempt Taxis rather than push them all up the lower Truchot?

Hello Big Brother. The moral minority have taken over the asylum and the Lower Pollet.

Let the taxis come in from the North Plantation then up to Moores just for those times on a Friday and Saturday

No i dont think so ,the taxis should not be in the town,we have no space to walk free , with all this traffic as it is ,and they are such bullys hooting you out the way, people only have to take a few steps to the taxi rank, what a lazy lot. end of story.

sol
So the Taxi drivers are such bullies, hooting you out of the way
Does that happen when they are driving on the pavement or is it when you are walking in the road?
It’s a lot safer when pedestrians are sober.
Ban the drunks and keep the road open.
“we have no space to walk free” – try walking on the pavement, rather than vomiting on it. Try walking/crawling up the High Street or the Arcade.
No need for a taxi ban – provided they are picking up a booked fare from that area. Better still, keep the road open completely.

RAY
actually its safer to walk on the road than the pavement, the way some people drive here, and dont know what your getting at, but i dont drink alcohol, so go away you silly little man .

The taxi rank is only 100 yards away I am sure that guests at the hotel can stagger that far.

Sol:
If you’re that punchy when sober I am not surprised you find it best not to drink alcohol!

As an infrequent visitor into Town for a beer/curry on weekends I was witness to the first night of road closure in the Lower Pollet on my way to the Taxi rank and can say that I was astonished to say the least as to the size of the crowd milling around outside the pubs and clubs there at just after midnight.
I witnessed a fight between a number bouncers and policemen with a group of drunken youths/men, at least 2 people vomiting/urinating and enough empty food wrappers and boxes to fill a skip.
Lucky old diners from D’Nellos and Riva a great night out!!

What’s the big deal? So guests at Moores will have to walk around 100 yards to the Taxi rank? Hardly a chore. If you’ve ordered a taxi, ask it to wait for you nearby. I assume this does not affect disabled people waiting for cars at the hotel though. If not, then for once tbis is a sensible decision by Environment (albeit with the usual inability to give adequate notice!)

RE: Closure Neglects Residents
In answer to your post in the paper, we feel that your comments were unfair and untrue. We believe that the Pollet should have been closed to transport years ago for the safety of the public on the two busiest nights of the week. I express the word safety as the road being closed for this reason alone and not to get people to spend more money as you seem to think it is.
And as for your comment “the only thing that talks in Guernsey, loud and clear, is money.” Is very untrue, its people’s safety that is more of a concern and just by simply closing this road is not going to make the public spend more money than they already do. We do not believe that it will encourage more drinking and rowdiness in town, only to improve the safety of those simply enjoying a night out.
Do you not think that people’s safety is more important than being able to drive down a road when this road is really not needed during the night? As we are sure it will be a lot easier for taxi drivers to drive back up the Trochet Road with no problems of people congregating in the road. I believe you comment on people being able to arrive at their front door untrue as if you have been to this area on a Friday or Saturday night you would know that trying to get a parking space in this area extremely unlikely and residents would still need to walk a distance to get to their property. We don’t feel that this will affect any members of the public except the ones who are out socialising in the area, or those who would be driving through, i.e. taxi drivers. There is no need to drive through the Pollet on a busy night as there are other routes you can take to get to the seafront which would not take any longer to use. We feel that further to your comment on trying to make town a safer place for the general public, this is one of the first moves that we believe is doing this. There is no access for cars through the High Street except Police vehicles during the night and there is no problem with congregation during this road and we believe this will be no different for this area of town.
You have your smoking ban, what do you want next, an alcohol ban?!!! And maybe a curfew??!!! I thought we were liberated not to still be living in the 1940’s ??

ESB you talk about pedestrian safety – huh!
What safety does a pedestrian get when walking through the Lower Pollet late evening.
Most likely be beaten up, vomited on, verbally abused, screamed at by drunken girls. No thanks I’d rather risk the traffic

Are the Police closing the road as a ‘special event’on Friday and Saturday nights
If so are they charging the clubs the same £2,000 they were trying to screw out of the Cobo Hotel for their special event closures?
If you already know the risk of walking though the lower pollet then why would you still pesist to walk when knowing drunk people are in the area then that is your own stupidity!!!! even with the road open you still get the same so with the road closed!!!!!! how many years have there been night clubs there and your now moaning!!!!!!!!

i hope guernsey enviroment teach (london, scotland ,ireland ,jersey)
how to deal with people that can’t behave ,close the streets ,give them space to do so ,
i was last night in the lower pollet between 11 and 11.45 .did not see one police car or on foot,
so i guess it’s working ,the problem it’s already sorted , close the street ,and we don’t need police ,
good thinking ,saves money
