Keep 50cc licences at 14, says instructor

Bike shop MD Tim Millard believes the age limit for riding a 50cc bike should stay at 14 and believes more youngsters would take the test – rather than riding on a provisional licence – if it was more user-friendly. (Picture by Peter Frankland, 1031615)
AN INSTRUCTOR says the motorcycling age limit should not change.
Currently, 14-year-olds can ride a 50cc scooter or motorbike on the road.
But after calls to change the law, the Environment Department has decided to ask islanders what they think should be done.
The move is part of a wider consultation looking at ways to tighten up driver licensing.
Brian Martel, who has been instructing motorcyclists for 33 years, said he would be asking for the age limit to stay the same.

Keep the licensing the same – if you are sensible you do not cause any problems.
Just make the penalties for infringememts much more severe across the board.
Speeding : year off minimum.
Drink driving : 10 years minimum.
ETC ETC
Make the idiots think or at least remove them from the road.

Put the motorbike/scooter minimum age up to 16. Make the lazy little sods do some exercise and learn how to ride a push bike properly before they’re given access to motorised transport.

If you want to see the burgeoning of the school run raise the age to 16.

Quite the opposite Neil. It would be a good start to countering the awful motorised transport culture that pervades this tiny rock.

I think the age limit to start motorcycling is correct at 14.Still at an age to listen ‘n’ learn and abide by.
16 year old, seen it, been it, done it all–less willing to listen and fully comprehend, got no time.
Youngsters, ride round in the back garden on a little bike, get your Dad to take you out on the road 2-up, you can never stop learning, it is never too early–the earlier-younger, the better. Go to race/trials meetings–watch, listen, learn, you can never gain too much experience, preparing you for the road.
What is minimum the age limit to ride a bike in France ? I rest my case.
We all have to make the big first step into life with responsibility maturity and respect–motorcyling is probably the best conveyer for developing these skills !!
