Magnificent supporters ditch England

THE camp is absolutely buzzing after our win against Wales – no joke.
It was a comprehensive 3-0 victory, which sets us up nicely for our final game against Turkey tomorrow and while there are plenty of permutations, what we know is that a win against the Turks will see us qualify.
A draw would leave us sweating on the Croatia result against Wales and other possible scenarios but I’ll let someone else do that math.
Two games in and it’s safe to say that we’re the best supported team here by a mile.
Tony Vance told us after yesterday’s game that 91 supporters from Guernsey were at the match.
From the player’s point of view it’s absolutely fantastic – they have never stopped willing us on and encouraging.
They’ve also decided to ditch the ‘c’mon England’ chant for ‘c’mon Guernsey’ – apparently they never felt comfortable saying the former anyway, but once Colin Fallaize, whose blood runs green, forcefully suggested them to go with Guernsey there was no going back. And while we’re all proud to be representing the three lions, we also know that first and foremost we’re representing our island out here.
Believe it or not, the game against Wales was in serious doubt because of torrential rain – so despite ‘that’ picture making the front of the press it’s not all been glorious sunshine here.
That means we’ve been keeping ourselves occupied indoors a lot of the time.
A few more players have caught the Mariokart bug and Dom Heaume is now the frontrunner, but we’ve also indulged in a bit of round-the-world table tennis.
Even the media lads, Andy and Russell from Channel TV and Matt from the Guernsey Press, got involved.
Myself and Alex Le Prevost shared the honours, while there were also some priceless images of Glyn Dyer taken by our team photographer Matt Bunn when the St Martin’s wide-man was eliminated.
We’ve also been running a fines system for when squad members say something stupid, are late for meetings, or have simply forgotten to bring along a playing card, which was entrusted to each of us at the start of the week, at meal times or on the way to training.
Fines are 10 Kuna, roughly £1.20, but there is a chance to appeal. Fortunately I was nominated as judge by captain Sam Cochrane and Matt Warren, so have the final say on whether issued fines were fair or frivolous – apparently I was the best man for the job due to my questioning of so many decisions on the pitch, but I have no clue where they got that idea from . . .
Back to the football, and what has been pleasing is that every player of our squad has now played a part in the tournament.
Needless to say we are all hoping we’ve done enough to make the starting XI for the Turkey match. As usual I’m sure we’ll find out if we’ve made it tomorrow morning before the afternoon kick-off – Jacques Isabelle will be hoping he has recovered from his six-stitch operation on his foot in the changing room after the game.
Plus, if there is footage of him going off on the stretcher somewhere, go and check it out – priceless.
