Time to take the safety route

Monday 27th September 2010, 2:30PM BST.

LIVING on a busy road in Guernsey must qualify you to know whether it’s dangerous or not. And as our page one story reveals today, residents at Rue Cauchez in St Martin’s  have simply had enough.

While most of us can settle down for the night safe in the knowledge that our homes and cars are likely to be in one piece by the morning, these people it would seem, cannot.

No one is going to argue that this busy corner, an arterial route to and from Town and the airport, is the only traffic accident blackspot in the island.

Sadly, far from it.

But it is clear from the fact that the concerned residents have spoken out in this newspaper that this is a situation that is deteriorating, fast.

During the course of a typical week, thousands of motorists and pedestrians will encounter this spot which also, just a few yards away, contends with shopping traffic accessing stores and businesses in St Martin’s village and motorists doing the school runs.

Problems are exacerbated by its location on a sharp bend where vehicles have been able to pick up speed – from the lights  coming down from Les Caches, and Rue Poudreuse coming up from Ville au Roi.

Turning onto the highway from its junction at Les Merriennes can also be hairy, even at the quietest of times.

One frequent user has described it as similar to joining a motorway from a slip road.

So, far from ideal then.

It is always difficult for the authorities to know exact facts and figures, as not every accident is reported. But the news that there were recently six incidents in three days will have made worrying reading.

The good news is that they are listening and already one police traffic expert is calling for an urgent review following call-outs to five crashes so far this year. Public Services has also pledged to look into the issue.

Coming up with a solution may be more difficult as it would seem very few motorists enjoy   seeing more traffic calming measures adding to journey times on our island roads.

But safety must come first.

Being wise after the event can often prove far too late.
